The Irving Moorin Scholarship Fund
After a seven year struggle with a rare form of cancer, Irving Moorin died at age 48. But the spirit and resolve he showed during that time was an inspiration both to his friends and other people with whom he came into contact. The Scholarship Fund was started by a group of close friends as a memorial to him.
The fund reaches out to those high school students in the Bridgeport, Connecticut area who show the same determination to overcome their hardships in obtaining a college degree. Since its inception in 1971, the award has grown in significance. It is highly sought after by graduating seniors, who but for this award might otherwise not be able to attend college.

Congratulations to our recipient of 2024!
2024 Recipient: Isabella Archila-Davila
High School: Trumbull High School
Isabella enrolled in the Agricultural program at Trumbull High School. Within the first two months of her freshman year her mother died. The Covid pandemic had shut down the school and she had to deal with online classes in addition to a situation at home turned upside down. Even while moving between relatives and friends, her performance at school was top-notch and her attitude remarkably composed and upbeat. In addition to her stellar grades, Isabella also was a member of the Latin Honor Society and worked at a restaurant.
Isabella is enrolled at UCONN Stamford and will pursue her passion for animals and veterinary science. This is someone who will do her best to help herself achieve her goals but will also do her best to help others.

Our 2023 recipient, Makayla Mutombu
The 2023 recipient of the Irving Moorin Scholarship is Makayla Mutombu of Fairfield Ludlowe High School. Among her many activities, outside of a full and demanding academic schedule, were memberships in the Chemistry and Broadcast Clubs. She also worked as a hostess at a local restaurant. Her cheerfulness and determination were a pleasure for her teachers to experience/observe, who never knew until recently some of the personal hardships that she endured. To quote one: "I spent twenty-two years in investment banking and finance. During my career, some of the qualities I looked for when hiring new people were passion, leadership and confidence. Makayla has these qualities."
Our motto is: To Help One Person is to Help the Whole World. Her special personality and achievements justify her selection this year with an award of $5,000. She will be attending Central Connecticut State University. We are confident that she will go on to help not only herself and but many others as she makes her way forward.
Our 2022 recipient, Sophia Peron
This year’s award recipient is Sophia Peron, a graduate of Fairfield Warde High School. She will be attending UCONN, majoring in family development and science. Besides a cumulative average of 4.16, Sophia works four days a week at a local childcare center and volunteers with “At Home With Friends” where she helped a young man with autism, encouraging him to connect with the world - especially during the Covid period.
Our motto is “To Help One Person is to Help The Whole World.” That is something Sophia takes to heart.
Our 2021 recipient, Carol Cheng
Carol graduated from Fairfield High School. While her Mother was in Cambodia dealing with issues related to their home, Carol lived with her Aunt and Uncle throughout the pandemic. Even while worrying about her Mother’s situation and being physically separated for over two years, Carol managed to achieve a high GPA and elicit comments like this from her guidance counselor: "She was a stunning addition to the class both in respect to her mastery of the material, her enthusiasm for science and her collaboration with other students. Carols’s consistent hard work made her stand out as an exceptional student, while her ability to connect with the content in a classroom is a quality unique to lifelong learners."
Carol will be attending UCONN/Stamford.
2020 saw two deserving candidates between whom we could not choose; congratulations to both Barbara Jones and Roger Dafoe!
Barbara Jones
Barbara will be attending Sacred Heart University. She was diagnosed with leukemia at the age of four and as a result of the illness became paralyzed from the waist down. She has risen above the odds and moved forward with great determination.
Roger Dafoe
Roger Dafoe will be attending Miami of Ohio. He lost his father at a young age. His hard work, whether it is for a local Y or as a salesperson for a cutlery company, attests to his strength of spirit and determination to make his own way in the world.
